Danube Fab asked us to help determine whether the same levels of safety and performance could be maintained when extending Free Routes from night-time to 24-hour implementation in the Danube Fab airspace.

Combining skills, experience and expertise

Bringing together 22 ROMATSA and 14 BULATSA controllers and five Romanian Airforce and two Bulgarian Airforce military controllers, we ran four simulation scenarios using different traffic samples. By working closely together, we successfully proved that FRA could be expanded if controllers were supported with a set of advanced ATC tools.

Careful analysis using diverse sources

To collect the most comprehensive feedback possible, we used questionnaires, debriefings and interviews complemented by data from the simulator recordings to analyse controller performance (workload and situation awareness), operational issues and the usability of the advanced ATC tools.

Providing targeted advice based on hard data

We were delighted to be able to provide 18 recommendations based on the validation of the eight RTS objectives including maintaining safety levels, increasing horizontal flight capacity, achieving optimised civil-military coordination and ensuring effective ATC tool support.
