Implementing a new airport – Istanbul
DHMI Turkey asked us to help validate the implementation of a new airport serving Istanbul from 2018. During the first phase, two parallel runways will have a capacity of 40 arrivals and 40 departures per hour – and by the final phase, 6 runways will carry 150 million passengers per year through the new airport.
Validating a radically new airspace
Working in close partnership with DHMI Turkey, we conducted a series of simulation sessions to support the implementation of phase 1. The completely new airspace design for the Istanbul TMA includes 14 ATC APP sectors in 3 layers and 3 airports. To achieve the highest possible capacity, 3 Point Merge Systems operate at the same time.
Customised simulations for perfect replication
We adapted the simulator to faithfully replicate the complex future DHMI system with all required ATC tools. We then customised strategic exercises to cover scenarios such as STAR and transition change during the approach, “RWY in use” change exercises, and intelligent speed tuning and constraints configuration in a very high traffic demand environment.
Centred on human factors
Between October 2017 and January 2018, the simulations brought together 300+ DHMI air traffic controllers for more than 90 measured exercises and enabled us to analyse advanced human factors based on objective and subjective, quantitative and qualitative data. To collect the most comprehensive feedback possible, we used questionnaires, debriefings and interviews complemented by data from the simulator recordings to analyse controller performance (workload and situational awareness), and operational issues.
At a glance
The simulation included 90 measured exercises, involving 300+ DHMI air traffic controllers, covering 14 ATC APP sectors in 3 layers. The airport will eventually serve 150 million passengers per year.
