A realistic Human-Machine Interface – key element of a successful simulation

The quality of a real-time simulation does not depend only on the realism of the traffic sample and the airspace, but also, and most of all, on the realism of the human machine interface. Indeed, to guarantee that metrics generated during the simulation are valid, the participating ATCOs must behave like in a real operational environment and therefore must be able to use their own human machine interface. Moreover, it reduces the familiarisation time to the minimum and ATCOs can just sit and control. With the ESCAPE ATC simulation platform this is possible.

A vast library of Human-Machine Interfaces

Over the last decades EUROCONTROL has developed a vast library of HMIs used in close to one hundred real-time simulations. We now cover almost all existing and available HMIs in use in Europe, be they industry based (Thales, Indra, LEONARDO, etc.) or proprietary. These different HMIs can be freely combined in a multi-stakeholder simulation context.

Proven technology – Layered Structure

Our HMI component is based on Harris Orthogon’s ODS Tool Box, which has proved to be a robust and reliable package on which we further developed additional layers with more advanced and complex ATC-specific HMI building blocks. This significantly speeds up the production of new HMI through configuration, or the prototyping of new ATC tools emerging from research.
